The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), through The Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano) and the Molecular Engineering Research Center for Advanced Materials (CEPID CEMol), is reopening applications for one (1) FAPESP Technical Training Fellowship IV (TT-IV) to support research on the processing and segmentation of X-ray microtomography data from carbon-based porous materials. The opportunity is linked to a FAPESP Regular Research Grant coordinated by Dr. Rubia Gouveia. Applications are open until June 30, 2026.
The project will be carried out at CNPEM, in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, and involves interdisciplinary activities among researchers from the fields of materials science and computer science at LNNano and The Brazilian Synchrotron Light National Laboratory (LNLS). The research focuses on the computational analysis of 4D tomographic datasets obtained from in situ experiments conducted at the Mogno beamline of LNLS.
Main Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be expected to:
- Develop computational techniques for processing, preprocessing, and segmentation of 4D tomographic datasets;
- Process images acquired through X-ray microtomography of carbon-based porous materials;
- Remove artifacts and enhance contrast in tomographic datasets;
- Perform phase segmentation (cryogel walls, oil, and air);
- Apply classical image-processing methods as well as computer vision, artificial intelligence, and machine-learning approaches;
- Use specialized software such as Annotat3D and Avizo/Amira;
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams from LNNano and Sirius;
- Support the analysis and interpretation of experimental results.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A degree in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Engineering Physics, or related fields;
- At least two years of research or professional experience after graduation, or a master’s degree, in activities related to the proposed research plan;
- Experience with tomography image processing and/or X-ray microscopy imaging;
- Experience with software for data processing, morphology, and morphometric analysis;
- Experience with machine-learning techniques applied to image analysis, including deep learning, is desirable.
Fellowship Details
- Type: FAPESP Technical Training Fellowship IV (TT-IV);
- Duration: 24 months;
- Workload: Full-time, exclusive dedication (40 hours per week);
- Stipend: BRL 4,520.00 per month, according to the current FAPESP fellowship table;

About the Project
The project aims to develop advanced methodologies for the analysis of 4D tomographic data from carbon-based porous materials acquired through X-ray microtomography. The research includes in situ experiments and time-resolved analyses performed at the Mogno beamline, one of the beamlines of Sirius, Brazil’s particle accelerator.
The activities involve the development and application of computational techniques for the segmentation and analysis of complex three-dimensional images, integrating traditional image-processing methods with modern artificial intelligence and machine-learning approaches. The work will be conducted in a highly interdisciplinary environment, bringing together researchers from materials science, computer science, and scientific instrumentation, while leveraging CNPEM’s state-of-the-art research infrastructure.
