Ilum selects 40 students for its 2nd class in the Bachelor of Science and Technology program
The second admissions process for the Ilum School of Science, an initiative of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas (SP), concluded on December 16, 2022 with 1,185 applicants for the free, full-time undergraduate course in science and technology. This year the admissions and selection process was refined, and the admissions data include all students who began the application process.
Applicant profile
Of the total number of applicants, 66% are in public high schools; 45% identified as female and 55% as male. Applications were received from every state. The Southeast was responsible for the most applications, followed by the Northeast, North, Center-West, and South.
Selection process
The selection process for Ilum takes place in three stages. The first stage involves the Statement of Interest, an opportunity for candidates to share the personal and academic experiences that led them to apply for the Bachelor of Science and Technology course offered by the Ilum School of Science. In the second stage, candidates submit their ENEM (national high school completion exam) scores, and finally the Evaluation Committee will pre-select up to 200 candidates who will be invited for individual interviews, which will be recorded and analyzed by the Committee. The final results of this process will be announced on February 28 on the Ilum website.
The first class at Ilum contained 50% public school alumni and 48% women, and only one student did not complete the first year of the program.
About the Ilum School of Science
The Ilum School of Science, an initiative of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), a social organization under the oversight of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), offers unique training for future scientists. This non-profit school is free for students and funded by the Ministry of Education (MEC); it was inaugurated in 2021 and its first class entered in 2022. Ilum offers a full-time bachelor’s course in Science, Technology, and Innovation over a three-year period. Half of the slots are reserved for students from public high schools, and successful applicants are eligible for benefits such as room, board, and transportation assistance. This course was granted the highest score possible by the Brazilian National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (INEP), and provides a solid scientific foundation in an interdisciplinary course. The curriculum spans disciplines in the life sciences, materials science, mathematical languages, and the humanities for a truly integrated educational experience based on ethics and cooperation in the search for answers and solutions to global problems in the modern world.
