CAMPINAS, BRAZIL – The Brazilian Association for Synchrotron Light Technology (ABTLuS) inaugurates its new board of directors next Wednesday, 13th of May, 2009. The inauguration ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the Association campus, in Campinas, with the presence of the Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology, Sergio Machado Rezende.
The engineer Michal Gartenkraut will be the Association’s new Director General. He will succeed the physicist José Antônio Brum, who held the position since 2001. The physicist Antonio José Roque da Silva and the physician Kleber Gomes Franchini will take on respectively the positions of Director of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) and Director of the Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CeBiME), both associated centers to ABTLuS.
New directors
Michal Gartenkraut is graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the Aeronautics Technology Institute (ITA), in Brazil, and has received a Ph.D. degree in Engineering-Economic Systems from the Stanford University, USA. Among other functions, he has been rector of ITA, from 2001 until 2005, and executive president of the Brazilian National Quality Foundation. Currently he is member of the Scientific Council of the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE).
The physicist Antonio José Roque da Silva has a Ph.D. from the University of California, at Berkeley, is professor of the Institute of Physics, of the University of São Paulo (USP) and has relevant research in the areas of Condensed Matter Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics. His main interests are in the areas of computer simulation, electronic structure calculations and electron transport properties, with focus on nanostructures.
The physician Kleber Gomes Franchini has made postdoctoral studies at the Medical College of Wisconsin, is professor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), and conducts research in the fields of cell signaling and drugs development, in which he holds two patents.
About ABTLuS
The Brazilian Association for Synchrotron Light Technology was classified as a Social Organization in 1997. Since 1998, it is responsible for managing the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory for the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) through a management contract.
Single center of Latin America to have a Synchrotron Light Source, LNLS allows atomic scale researches in areas such as Chemistry, Physics, Materials Engineering, Environment and Life Sciences.
In 2008, the Association started operating the newly formed Bioethanol Science and Technology Center (CTBE), an institution created in order to contribute to maintain Brazilian leadership in the sustainable production of bioethanol from sugarcane through state-of-the-art research, development and innovation.
With the appointment of its director, the Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CeBiME), which was part of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory facilities, will become an associated center to ABTLuS, as LNLS and the CTBE currently are.
Created in 1999, CeBiME develops and coordinates research in the area of Structural Molecular Biology. Its facilities and personnel are engaged in the elucidation of protein structure and function. Besides the nuclear magnetic resonance laboratory, the center has also laboratories for mass spectrometry, molecular biology, protein crystallization and spectroscopy. The center is also responsible for three beamlines of the Synchrotron Light Source dedicated to the study of the structure of proteins.
