The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) offers a research position, with a scholarship from The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), in the Technical Training Level 5 (TT-5) category, lasting 2 years, worth R$ 9,320.00 monthly. The opportunity is linked to FAPESP nº 2024/12890-5 research support, arising from a cooperation agreement with the Serrapilheira Institute (7th public call for science support).
The project will be carried out in person with the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio) Protein Design Group, at CNPEM.
Project title:“Can artificial intelligence predict and design immunological synapses?”
About the project
The objective is to evaluate whether machine learning and deep learning methods can predict and plan immunological synapses, formed by the interaction between T cell receptors (TCR) and antigens presented on cell surfaces.
Specific activities of the fellow:
- Develop, implement and optimize machine learning and deep learning classifier models for predicting the interaction between proteins of the immune system, using protein sequence and structure data.
- Develop and implement generative models based on immune system proteins’ sequence or structure.
- Develop and implement protein language models.
- Maintain and version codes in institutional repositories and support web interface development.
- Maintain and build high-performance clustered containers (HPCC).
How to apply
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or related areas in the Exact Sciences area.
- Minimum 5 years of proven experience in research or professional activity in the area of the proposed activities, after graduation, or PhD title in an area related to the project activities.
- Fulfill the requirements described in the link: https://fapesp.br/bolsas/tt
- Exclusive commitment: 40 hours per week.
Desirable and distinctive requirements
- Experience in computational structural biology.
- Experience in machine learning and deep learning applied to proteins.
- Experience with Linux systems and Python programming (particularly with PyTorch and scikit-learn).

About CNPEM
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is home to a state-of-the-art, multi-user and multidisciplinary scientific environment and works on different fronts within the Brazilian National System for Science, Technology and Innovation. A social organization overseen by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), CNPEM is driven by research that impacts the areas of health, energy, renewable materials, and sustainability. It is responsible for Sirius, the largest assembly of scientific equipment constructed in the country, and is currently constructing Project Orion, a laboratory complex for advanced pathogen research. Highly specialized science and engineering teams, sophisticated infrastructure open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects involving the productive sector, and training for researchers and students are the pillars of this institution that is unique in Brazil and able to serve as a bridge between knowledge and innovation. It is responsible for operating the Brazilian Synchrotron Light (LNLS), Biosciences (LNBio), Nanotechnology (LNNano), and Biorenewables (LNBR) National Laboratories, as well as the Ilum School of Science, which offers a bachelor’s degree program in science and technology with support from the Ministry of Education (MEC).
