Materials for Ciência Aberta [open science] event will make it easier to make connections with the curriculum
Are you ready for Ciência Aberta? On May 30 and 31, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) will present another edition of its main scientific outreach event, Ciência Aberta, at its campus in Campinas, São Paulo. This open science event will feature over 90 activities intended to familiarize the general public with the research carried out at the Center. The list of activities and the event map are now available at the Ciência Aberta website.
As in the previous edition, Ciência Aberta 2025 will be held over two days. Friday May 30 is exclusively reserved for school groups that have already been registered and confirmed, while on Saturday May 31 the event is open to the public without prior registration.
The complete list of all activities contains information including descriptions, contents, and which area of the Center is responsible for each activity. This list can be filtered, as the activities are also tagged with the concepts, subject areas and even educational skills involved, so visitors can select which activities to prioritize. The online map also makes it easier to explore the large campus.
Bridging the gap between research and school
The list of activities can also be used by educators to integrate the visit with classroom content. For example, teachers who want the trip to focus on activities related to biology can select this filter under the ‘Subjects’ listing and see the 50 attractions with this tag. They can also filter by more specific concepts: for example, selecting the ‘Electromagnetism’ filter under the ‘Concepts’ listing yields 18 activities addressing this topic. Teachers can even select specific skills from the Brazilian National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC) to reinforce specific concepts in their curricula and syllabi, making the connection between the knowledge presented at this event and the classroom experience even clearer.
About CNPEM
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is home to a state-of-the-art, multi-user and multidisciplinary scientific environment and works on different fronts within the Brazilian National System for Science, Technology and Innovation. A social organization overseen by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), CNPEM is driven by research that impacts the areas of health, energy, renewable materials, and sustainability. It is responsible for Sirius, the largest assembly of scientific equipment constructed in the country, and is currently constructing Project Orion, a laboratory complex for advanced pathogen research. Highly specialized science and engineering teams, sophisticated infrastructure open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects involving the productive sector, and training for researchers and students are the pillars of this institution that is unique in Brazil and able to serve as a bridge between knowledge and innovation. CNPEM’s research and development activities are carried out through its four National Laboratories: Synchrotron Light (LNLS), Biosciences (LNBio), Nanotechnology (LNNano), Biorenewables (LNBR), as well as its Technology Unit (DAT) and the Ilum School of Science — an undergraduate program in Science and Technology supported by the Ministry of Education (MEC).
