Applications will be accepted at no cost until December 20 at the Ilum website; 40 spaces are available, with half reserved for public school students
Registration is now open to apply for the bachelor’s program in science and technology. This will be the third class at Ilum School of Science; the school opened in 2022 and is an initiative of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), an organization linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
This full-time program lasts three years and has earned the maximum score from the Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Research (INEP), implementing innovative educational ideas and methodologies to shape scientists and researchers who are connected to the reality of today’s scientific research as well as future challenges. The school is a non-profit institution and receives support from the Ministry of Education (MEC).
“What we are looking for, and what we are preparing, are young scientists with experience who know how to approach and solve problems, particularly interdisciplinary problems. Today, the big questions in science involve various areas, and the professional who is going to stand out is the one who has this vision of science as a whole to seek solutions,” says the physicist Adalberto Fazzio, Director of the Ilum School.
Selection process
A total of 40 slots will be offered for the third class; half are set aside for students coming from public high schools. All selected students will receive free room, board, and transport. The school also offers each student English classes and a laptop computer with all the software they need for their academic activities to use while they are at Ilum.
Candidates can apply online at no cost by completing a form on the Ilum website (https://ilum.cnpem.br/), from September 18 to December 20. Along with their personal information, applicants submit a statement of interest explaining why they want to study science at Ilum; the selection process then considers ENEM high school completion testing results. After these stages, 100 finalists will be invited for individual interviews, and the candidates with the best results in all phases of the application process will be selected for admission.
About CNPEM
A sophisticated and effervescent environment for research and development, unique in Brazil and present in few scientific centers in the world, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is a private non-profit organization, under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). The Center operates four National Laboratories and is the birthplace of the most complex project in Brazilian science – Sirius – one of the most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world. CNPEM brings together highly specialized multi-thematic teams, globally competitive laboratory infrastructures open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects in partnership with the productive sector and training of researchers and students. The Center is an environment driven by the search for solutions with impact in the areas of Health, Energy and Renewable Materials, Agro-environment, and Quantum Technologies. As of 2022, with the support of the Ministry of Education (MEC), CNPEM expanded its activities with the opening of the Ilum School of Science. The interdisciplinary higher course in Science, Technology and Innovation adopts innovative proposals with the aim of offering excellent, free, full-time training with immersion in the CNPEM research environment. Through the CNPEM 360 Platform, it is possible to explore, in a virtual and immersive way, the main environments and activities of the Center, visit: https://pages.cnpem.br/cnpem360/.
