What people say about the CNPEM
Glauco Arbix
Professor in the Department of Sociology, Innovation Observatory, University of SĂ£o Paulo (USP)
My program and field of research address technology, innovation, and development and I believe that any reflection on Brazilian science would be difficult without getting to know the CNPEM from the inside. It is certainly the most advanced center for Brazilian research, with a high standard of excellence. But what has always captured my attention is that the CNPEM has never proposed to be anything more than a center within the Brazilian system for production of scientific knowledge.
Remember that the obstacles were enormous in terms of funding, technology, and science and technology strategies. But the initial ambition overcame these challenges, trained a new generation of researchers, opened up new fields of research, obtained results with repercussions in the economy, and even helped develop capacity in a network of Brazilian companies.
The current vision of Sirius, which is still in the commissioning phase, stirs hope that Brazilian science will receive the same recognition and treatment that has advanced various countries. We are talking about cutting-edge science, which is more necessary than ever in today’s world, where knowledge is key to constructing an educated, fair, and decent country. It is the foundation and an example for quality education. The CNPEM is the most advanced point in Brazilian science.
