Users from outside the state of São Paulo whose proposals are approved may request travel and lodging assistance
From March 1, 2025, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) will accept research proposals from the external academic community to use the Bioassays Laboratory (LBE) operated by the Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio). Proposals will be accepted on an ongoing basis, and the approved projects will be carried out between April and December 2025.
Unique equipment and methods at LBE
The Bioassays Laboratory offers complete infrastructure for biochemical assays and is equipped with a CLARIOstar plate reader (BMG) and a Multidrop liquid dispenser (Thermo Fisher Scientific). It also has support equipment such as an Eppendorf 5810R centrifuge and Hybaid hybridization oven. The LBE infrastructure makes it possible to conduct experiments on small and large scales (high-throughput screening), using 96 and 384 well plates.
Bioassays can be carried out using various analytic methods including colorimetry, fluorimetry, and fluorescence and luminescence polarization, ensuring versatility and precision for different types of analyses. Learn more about the equipment and more details about the open facility.
CNPEM’s professionals offer support from start to finish
The LBE team offers broad scientific support in experimental design, optimizing methods, selecting controls for assays, and throughout the entire experimentation process, as well as in analyzing and interpreting the resulting data. The facility is designed to meet the needs of the external scientific community, making it possible not only to conduct experiments but also to transfer knowledge and train science professionals.
Users must be able to participate in the entire experimentation process in person, and are responsible for all the materials used in the assays (such as proteins, ligands, and controls). Note that users from outside the state of São Paulo may request assistance for travel and lodging – learn more at CNPEM’s User Office (EdU) assistance page. Users may opt to use previously established protocols at LBE if technically feasible.
How to submit a proposal
Proposals will be selected based on the technical viability of the proposed protocol, considering the specifications of the available equipment. To establish new protocols, online meetings will be held between the LBE team and the user to ensure alignment on needs and the viability of the experiment. If you have any questions about the facilities, email us at lbesuporte@lnbio.cnpem.br.
Proposals will only be accepted via the SAU online system.
Important dates
- Start of submission period: March 1, 2025
- End of submission period: November 28, 2025
- Experimental period: April 1, 2025 to December 12, 2025
About CNPEM
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is a state-of-the-art, multi-user and multidisciplinary scientific environment with activities on different fronts within the Brazilian National System for Science, Technology and Innovation. A social organization overseen by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), CNPEM is driven by research that impacts the areas of health, energy, renewable materials, and sustainability. Responsible for Sirius, the country’s largest scientific research infrastructure, CNPEM is currently constructing Project Orion, a laboratory complex for advanced pathogen research. Highly specialized science and engineering teams, sophisticated infrastructure open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects involving the productive sector, and training for researchers and students are the pillars of this institution that is unique in Brazil and able to serve as a bridge between knowledge and innovation. CNPEM is responsible for operating the Brazilian Synchrotron Light (LNLS), Biosciences (LNBio), Nanotechnology (LNNano), and Biorenewables (LNBR) National Laboratories, as well as the Ilum School of Science, which offers a bachelor’s degree program in science and technology with support from the Ministry of Education (MEC).
About LNBio
The Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio) is dedicated to the study of human health, combining integrative biology with advanced technologies. With competencies in gene editing, microphysiological systems, bioimaging, and tissue engineering, LNBio works to discover molecular targets and develop innovative therapies for illnesses that are of public importance. This broad approach, which includes molecules and living organisms, unravels molecular mechanisms to identify bioactive compounds that are essential to develop new active pharmaceutical ingredients. LNBio concentrates its efforts on demands from the public health system, using state-of-the-art infrastructure and a matrix work model to promote innovation and development at the crossroads between science and health. In order to integrate health with socioeconomic and environmental factors, LNBio serves as a scientific platform that is available to the government, able to develop advanced technologies that respond to strategic issues. LNBio is part of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas, São Paulo, a private, non-profit organization overseen by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI).
