{"id":63376,"date":"2025-08-22T14:22:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T17:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnpem.br\/?p=63376"},"modified":"2025-08-22T14:28:42","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T17:28:42","slug":"cnpem-researcher-named-mid-career-leader-by-astmh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnpem.br\/en\/cnpem-researcher-named-mid-career-leader-by-astmh\/","title":{"rendered":"CNPEM Researcher named Mid-Career Leader by ASTMH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rafael Elias Marques, researcher at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), has been selected by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) to join the inaugural cohort of the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mid-Career Leaders Program<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Founded in 1903, ASTMH is the world\u2019s largest international scientific organization dedicated to reducing the global burden of tropical infectious diseases and improving global health. The new program has selected 15 scientists from around the world for a one-year cohort focused on leadership and professional development, including mentorship, leadership workshops, career exchange and peer network expansion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rafael holds a degree in Biology from UFMG and specializes in virology and immunology, with emphasis on arboviruses that affect Latin American populations. Since joining CNPEM in 2016, he has worked in high-containment laboratories (BSL-2 and BSL-3) to unravel viral structures and propose therapeutic strategies against emerging viruses. In 2021, he led the first complete viral structure determination ever achieved in Brazil \u2014 the Mayaro virus, responsible for a fever with symptoms similar to chikungunya. More recently, his group pioneered the use of synchrotron light to obtain high-resolution 3D images showing inflammation caused by Mayaro in infected tissues, an approach that may advance future diagnostics and treatments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond his research, Rafael is part of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Project Orion<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a cutting-edge laboratory complex that will host the first BSL-4 facility in Latin America, directly connected to a synchrotron light source. Orion will provide unparalleled infrastructure for the study of viruses, bacteria and fungi, supporting the development of diagnostics, vaccines, treatments and public health policies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Rafael, leadership means <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cmotivating people, promoting professional growth and building a cohesive team that values individual independence, collaboration and creativity, while recognizing the importance of collective work and shared achievements\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\">About CNPEM<\/h2>\n<p data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\">The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is a state-of-the-art, multi-user and multidisciplinary scientific environment with activities on different fronts within the Brazilian National System for Science, Technology and Innovation. A social organization overseen by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), CNPEM is driven by research that impacts the areas of health, energy, renewable materials, and sustainability and is responsible for Sirius, the country\u2019s largest scientific research infrastructure. CNPEM is currently constructing Project Orion, a laboratory complex for advanced pathogen research. Highly specialized science and engineering teams, sophisticated infrastructure open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects involving the productive sector, and training for researchers and students are the pillars of this institution that is unique in Brazil and able to serve as a bridge between knowledge and innovation.
