Training aims to qualify professionals in laboratories that research Risk Group 3 (RG-3) pathogens, how it is classified, for example, the Covid-19 virus<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Between November 25th and 28th<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM)<\/span><\/b> carried out another training<\/span> session<\/span> for researcher<\/span>s on <\/span>Risk Group 3 (RG-3)<\/span> laboratory practices, also known as h<\/span>igh-containment biological laboratories<\/span>. <\/span>The training is part of <\/span>CNPEM Biosafety Training and Capacity Building Program<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>and happens in the Orion project<\/span> context \u2014 <\/span>laboratory complex for advanced research on pathogens<\/span>, <\/span>which will bring together unprecedented maximum biosafety facilities (BSL-4)<\/span> in Latin Americ<\/span>a, <\/span>being the world’s first connected to a synchrotron light source, Sirius<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lasting four days and featuring practical and theoretical activities<\/span>, <\/span>the training took place <\/span>at<\/span> the training laboratory located <\/span>in<\/span> the CNPEM campus<\/span>,<\/span> in Campinas<\/span>. <\/span>The space is a faithful replica of<\/span> BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories<\/span> (<\/span>high and maximum<\/span>-c<\/span>ontainment<\/span> biological<\/span> laboratories<\/span>, respectively<\/span>), <\/span>allowing the execution of complex procedures under laboratory conditions<\/span>, <\/span>but without actual exposure to<\/span> pathogenic agents<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The diversity of institutions represented in the class reflects the program<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>reach<\/span> and the <\/span>scientific community’s interest in improving their skills through training offered by CNPEM<\/span>. <\/span>Among the participating organizations were<\/span> Pontifical Catholic University of Rio <\/span>Grande do Sul (PUC-RS), <\/span>Butantan<\/span> Institute, University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP), <\/span>State University of Campinas<\/span> (Unicamp), <\/span>Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz<\/span>-RJ<\/span>)<\/span> and the <\/span>Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa)<\/span>, <\/span>with representatives from the states of Mato Grosso (MT) and Santa Catarina (SC)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In this new module we ha<\/span>d<\/span> participants from the most diverse backgrounds and positions in their institutions<\/span>, <\/span>which are <\/span>major<\/span> references in national science<\/span>, <\/span>meeting the training proposal<\/span>, <\/span>which is to reach different professional groups that work in BSL-3 laboratories in the country<\/span>. <\/span>This module in particular was well contested by Brazilian professionals<\/span>, <\/span>and had competition from candidates from other Latin American countries<\/span>\u201d, <\/span>informed Tatiana Ometto<\/span>, CNPEM\u2019s <\/span>Biosafety Specialist<\/span> and responsible for <\/span>carrying out the Program<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research Technician at the Butantan Institute<\/span>, e<\/span>xperienced in research and development of vaccines and biopharmaceuticals<\/span>, <\/span>Eduardo Alfredo Adami was one of the training students and was impacted by the <\/span>mockup<\/span><\/i> space<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>What I found most impressive is the structure, which has a real laboratory for simulations to be carried out\u201d<\/span>, <\/span>he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cristiano Valim Bizarro is a professor at PUC-RS<\/span>, <\/span>took part in the training<\/span>, <\/span>and highlighted the strategic relevance of the training offered<\/span>. “<\/span>Preparing the academic community and research institutes to respond to unexpected health situations<\/span> with technical capabilities and qualified training<\/span>, <\/span>It is something indispensable and strategic for the country<\/span>\u201d, he <\/span>evaluated<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
