Researchers working on high-complexity scientific projects recommend holding the Confer\u00eancia Livre: Grandes Projetos de Ci\u00eancia, Tecnologia e Inova\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong> [Open Meeting on Large Science, Technology and Innovation Projects] in order to include proposed solutions to problems related to carrying out and maintaining these efforts within the sphere of the 5th Brazilian National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation.<\/p>\n

This event is scheduled for April 18 and 19, with in-person and virtual attendance options, at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas, S\u00e3o Paulo. Above all, the group aims to solidify a national strategy for large-scale scientific projects. Even though they work on science, technology and innovation in distinct areas, researchers share common problems that include the instability of financial resources over the long term, and governance within a business model that can provide operational sustainability to projects.<\/p>\n

In terms of human resources, the challenge is to maintain a quantity of trained researchers with compatible remuneration, since these candidates are drawn into the international market by irresistible offers. This group of scientists includes Am\u00edlcar Rabelo (UFCG), who is involved with the astrophysics\/cosmology plan to construct the Bingo radio telescope, and Jos\u00e9 Roque (CNPEM), who leads Project Sirius.<\/p>\n

They will guide the discussions among researchers who use complex scientific infrastructure in their work, such as Edgard Morya (Santos Dumont Institute), Isolda Costa (Brazilian Nuclear and Energy Research Institute, IPEN), Wilson Calvo (Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission, CNEN), Thomas Lewinsohn (University of Campinas\/PELD), the National Education and Research Network (RNP), Claudia Mendes (Giant Magellan Telescope, GMT), Wagner Corradi (Brazilian National Astrophysics Laboratory, LNA), Ignacio Bediaga (Brazilian National Network for High Energy Physics, RENAFAE), and secretaries, directors, and analysts from various ministries and funding agencies.<\/p>\n

Am\u00edlcar Rabelo agrees with the other scientists that \u201cthere is a need to clearly define what large ST&I projects in Brazil are. To mention just a few examples, there are projects with large-scale infrastructure like Sirius, major international collaborations and associations like Brazil’s participation in CERN, and expansive national networks like PELD [Brazil’s long-term ecology research program]. These large projects require a different approach by public entities and support agencies to ensure research continuity over the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n
