O bi\u00f3logo escoc\u00eas Richard Henderson, de 72 anos, da Universidade de Cambridge, no Reino Unido, e os biof\u00edsicos Joachim Frank, de 77, alem\u00e3o radicado na Universidade Columbia, Estados Unidos, e Jacques Dubochet, de 75, da Universidade de Lausanne, na Su\u00ed\u00e7a, dividiram em tr\u00eas partes iguais o pr\u00eamio. Henderson foi o primeiro a obter uma imagem tridimensional com resolu\u00e7\u00e3o at\u00f4mica usando criomicroscopia, em 1990. At\u00e9 ent\u00e3o, o m\u00e9todo que permitia obter imagens mais detalhadas era a cristalografia, mas nem sempre funcionava. \u201cMuitas estruturas em biologia eram resistentes aos outros m\u00e9todos, como a cristalografia por raio X ou a espectroscopia de resson\u00e2ncia magn\u00e9tica nuclear\u201d, explicou Henderson ao site do Pr\u00eamio Nobel. Esse era o caso das prote\u00ednas de membrana celular que ele estudava. Frank desenvolveu entre 1975 e 1986 um m\u00e9todo de processamento que permite criar um modelo tridimensional n\u00edtido a partir de imagens bidimensionais. Com isso, ele aumentou as possibilidades de aplica\u00e7\u00f5es da t\u00e9cnica. Dubochet conseguiu acrescentar \u00e1gua ao sistema, de uma maneira especial. No v\u00e1cuo, necess\u00e1rio ao funcionamento do microsc\u00f3pio, a \u00e1gua l\u00edquida evapora e as mol\u00e9culas colapsam. Ao resfriar rapidamente a gota de \u00e1gua que envolve a amostra, ele conseguiu que ela adquirisse uma estrutura semelhante \u00e0 do vidro (vitrifica\u00e7\u00e3o), na qual as mol\u00e9culas mant\u00eam sua configura\u00e7\u00e3o natural.
